In Cash Out Of Hand: A Convict’s Tale, The Hár pairs traditional sets of tunes with the narration of excerpts from the 1870 biography “The Bushranger of Van Diemen’s Land”, alongside poetry by Irish convict Frank “the Poet” MacNamara. The show absorbs the audience into a harrowing journey of a young man-turned-criminal Martin Cash, exiled to Australia as a convict, escaping the chain-gangs and imprisonment in Port Arthur, and fighting for freedom for himself and his mates. The story, laden with contemplation, excitement, grief and mischief, is coloured cinematically by The Hár, meeting the story beats with gallivanting reels or wistful airs. Ciara Sudlow (fiddle) and Fiona Doyle (whistles/flute) lead these captivating tune settings with rhythm section Will Richards (guitar) and Jet Kye Chong (bodhran) hot on their heels.
