The world’s best-selling saloon car, the Toyota Camry, is back on Irish soil after a 14 year absence. The all-new Toyota Camry Hybrid Saloon is a winning combination.
It takes the sophisticated elegance of a quality saloon and adds all the benefits of a Toyota Hybrid. Powered by an all-new 2.5-litre petrol engine the driving experience has been transformed, allowing the hybrid system to produce impressive power of 218 bhp and 221Nm of torque, alongside excellent fuel economy, and CO2 emissions from just 98-101g/km.
The supremely quiet drive is made even more tranquil thanks to superior sound insulation that reduces road and wind noise at all speeds.
Impressive Safety Features:
The new Camry Hybrid comes with Toyota Safety Sense as standard, providing a unique set of advanced driver assistance technologies.
Toyota Safety Sense features a newly developed set of five active technologies – Pre-Collision System or Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beam, Road Sign Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control.
With the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, safety and ride refinement meet exhilarating handling and intuitive new technology. With 524-litres of usable boot space, the Camry Hybrid Saloon can accommodate a golf bag and accessories with ease, while the boot capacity can be increased dramatically by folding the rear seats – a task that is made easy by way of a pair of levers in the boot.
Three Trim Levels:
There are three trim levels in the new Toyota Camry Hybrid – an un-named entry-level Camry, mid-spec ‘Sol’ and top-spec ‘Platinum’, with all models powered by an all-new 2.5-litre petrol engine which is mated to a self-charging electric motor.
No matter which model you choose, generous equipment levels are guaranteed, with even the entry-level model coming with standard items such as stylish 17” alloy wheels, dual-zone air-conditioning, LED headlights, reversing camera, front & rear parking sensors, along with a raft of high-tech safety equipment.
Upgrade to the ‘Sol’ model (a modest €980 extra), and you will receive heated & electrically-operated leather seats, satellite navigation, and a woodgrain insert on the dashboard, while the range-topping Platinum model benefits from the addition of 18” alloy wheels, an upgraded interior, wireless phone charging, and additional safety equipment – for a premium of €2,155 over the ‘Sol’ model.
Car On Review:
My review car was a Toyota Camry Hybrid ‘Platinum’ which looked terrific in striking Pearl Red pearlescent paintwork with contrasting beige leather upholstery.
With more than adequate performance (0-100km/h in 8.3-seconds) and super-quiet driving around town, driver’s will be hard pushed to realise when the petrol engine kicks in, with a comfortable ride quality equivalent to some ‘premium’ brand models.
The spacious cabin in the new Camry Hybrid Saloon is built with precision, with a logical and intuitive layout allowing for a relaxed driving experience. Thankfully, the e-CVT (automatic) is super-smooth, with the engine noise produced by CVT-equipped cars of old now pretty much absent.
The car corners flatly and without fuss, while strong brakes ensure excellent stopping performance. Fuel consumption as low as 5.1l/100km on the new WLTP combined driving cycle ensures that petrol station visits are as infrequent as possible. The hybrid engine in the new Camry allows drivers to experience a smooth drive, while producing up to 90% fewer NOX emissions, and less CO2 emissions compared to driving a diesel vehicle.
For peace of mind, in addition to the 3 year/100,000km manufacturers warranty, all Toyota Hybrids come with a 5 year hybrid component warranty. The new Camry Hybrid Saloon is priced from just €39,010 (ex-delivery), and certainly is a car that is ‘built for a better world’.
