‘Mrs Higgins’ amazed by reaction to Woodies advert

The actor at the centre of the tearjerker Woodies Christmas ad says she has been “overwhelmed” by the reaction to the TV commercial.

In the heart-warming footage a teenager fixes a pensioner’s broken gate in an anonymous act of kindness.

The ad was filmed on Ebenezer Terrrace in Dunroe, Dublin 8 with fake snow covering the ground for the production period.

Marie Comerford, who plays Mrs Higgins, told Dublin Gazette: “It was two days and I loved every minute of it.”

Marie is known to many as one of the actors in Wicklow Gaol, where she worked for 15 years in the museum before retiring.

She revealed: “I had an experience in Tesco when I went shopping. The minute I went in, the staff all started cheering me and calling me Mrs Higgins.

“I mean that’s just overwhelming, I thought it was lovely of them to do that.”

The ad has had viewers welling up since it first aired two weeks ago. It centres on simple acts of kindness and home-making in a tight-knit Dublin community.

Teenager Arron fixes her creaky gate, an act that reflects the true spirit of Christmas and looking out for one another in a year unlike any other due to Covid-19.

Woodies was also inspired by the many selfless acts that helped it raise €415,567 for four children’s charities this year with the Woodie’s Heroes campaign.

Woodies marketing director Suzanne Quinn said: “We have seen how small acts of homemaking have become a part of everyone’s lives, more so now than ever.

“Mrs Higgins celebrates these acts of kindness happening across Ireland and the immense sense of community – Team Woodie’s feel privileged to be able to play a small part in helping make that happen.”

The company’s head of marketing Hilda Lyon added: “We wanted to produce a Christmas Campaign that told a story that was relevant to our customers and their lives.

“Christmas is a time for reflection, and we wanted to reflect on the good that has come from this past year, a year where we all did our best to look after one another.”
