Rathcoole family’s challenge in memory of angel Grace

A couple whose baby daughter was born sleeping are taking on a mammoth challenge in her honour to raise funds for the Coombe Maternity Hospital.

Louise Ryan and her husband Gary, who live in Rathcoole, were overjoyed in February when they found out that they would be welcoming their third child in October.

Louise, Gary, their son Josh and daughter Katie were delighted to see the 12-week scan. But with the 20-week scan came the news that every parent dreads.

The couple were told that their little girl had a condition called triploidy syndrome which would mean that she could not survive outside the womb.

As they tried to come to terms with the devastating news Louise’s waters broke and little Grace Esther Ryan was born sleeping on June 20.

Gary said: “I was so proud of Louise and our little angel Grace; so perfect in every way.

“We took Grace home the next day as it was important that Grace got to stay in our home and meet everyone including her big brother and sister.

“Grace has made such an impression on our lives and we will never be the same again. There is a hole in our hearts that can never be filled.

“The Coombe and their team helped us get through these very tough times. No family should ever have to go through what we went through but unfortunately the reality other families will experience the very same pain we have experienced.

“The love, compassion and support they gave us is why we are organising this Run for Grace.”

Gary and Louise will take on a 30km challenge between them on October 17 that will see them travel to the Coombe Hospital from their home in Rathcoole and back.

Gary will be jogging and Louise will be cycling, and the couple hope to raise €10,000 for the hospital and its staff and patients.

They hope to present the donations to the hospital on October 19 – Grace’s due date – and need as much help as they can get to reach the goal.
